The GNG entertainment team have had such bad luck this Halloween. It started with the cancellation of Leeds Fright Nights due to venue issues, and then there was the trouble experienced at Cusworth Hall. This left them with just Nightmare Circus at Doncaster Racecourse as their main event.
GNG shows are usually full of rich and detailed storytelling and theatrical scenes but could they pull this off in a commercial marquee at a racecourse? The answer is both yes and no. With two mazes to experience, we went along to see:
Pogo's Funhouse - We were dared to enter a fun house that allegedly held the bodies of 12 dead clowns. There were some great vignettes inside but due to the build within the marquee there were no real sets as such and scenes were broken up by long corridors of Heras fencing. After meeting the clowns and some other circus freaks we ended up being chased out the attraction with a chainsaw finale. There was some good acting in this attraction but due to the layout and build it was really difficult to hear the characters' dialogue at times.
Between the 2 mazes was an unusual sideshow - a man singing in about 10 different languages which was a bit strange but quite good fun!
Freakshow Live - this was the second maze of the night and was a traditional Heras fencing strobe maze. The level of smoke in the room and the brightness of the strobes meant we never really knew where we were or what was coming next. The maze seemed full of actors in morph suits although there were some in just general street wear which was a bit bizarre. Even so they were working well in what must have been a very demanding atmosphere.
Overall the event was fun, but just didn't feel like a GNG event. There was a real lack of story telling and sets and seemed like the type of generic attraction that anyone starting in the Halloween industry would do - not a company that has created such unique events as Scary Tales Live, Project Fear and Bunker 13.
Saying that - the general public seemed to be enjoying the mazes but we cant wait for the GNG guys to get back to doing what they do best - atmospheric intelligent stories.
